Good films, irrespective of their language have many a times inspired filmmakers from around the world. And so is the case when it comes to South films inspiring remakes in Bollywood and vice-versa. These days we hear a lot about South films being adapted in Bollywood, of which some have been the biggest hits - Wanted, Drishyam, Singham, et al. And with the South film industry growing fast, Bollywood too holds a stake in the credit for inspiring filmmakers down South who similarly adapted and remade Bollywood films. The adaption to our knowledge may not be literal, but one often wonders as to what the remake will look like in a different state with a different language. And while Bollywood has made a lot many successful adaptations from films down South, here is a list of our favourite Bollywood films that were remade in South:
The plot of the film revolves around the lives of three students of a prestigious college, and relates their dreams and anxieties to that of our youth today. Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, and R. Madhavan in the lead, made them quite a team as they together were a great combination of good comic timing as well as drama. With the film turning out to be one of the highest grosser, the film was not only dubbed in Telugu and various other languages, but was also adapted in Tamil with the title Nanban.
Ranveer Singh’s debut film also starring Anushka Sharma as the bubbly Punjabi girl made them appear quite a match in their very first film together. By then little did we know that the two were destined to be in the league of the biggest stars in Bollywood. The chemistry between the two really worked for the film, because of which the film looked so promising that the it was not only adapted in Tamil with the title Aaha Kalyanam, but also in Telugu with it being titled Jabardasth.
Jab We Met is like an all time favourite film, when ever sad just watch it and it will bring a smile on your face. This film was the last time we saw the then love birds Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan talk about share screen space together. And though things seem to be fine now, the two don’t even seem likely to star opposite each other again. All said and done, the film received so much appreciation and love that it was remade in Tamil with a title- Kanden Kadhalai.
Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar’s on-screen banter IN omg: Oh My God! had left all of us in splits, but it was not comedy that the film won our hearts for. The film with a very fascinating concept was a never-done-before story, it subtly put out a message that in a manner appeared funny but was at the same time it was a valuable one. The film inspired a film titled Gopala Gopala which was made in Telugu.
Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha starrer Dabangg was not only Sonakshi’s debut film, but it also had Salman play a cop the second time after Wanted. Salman gave back-to-back flops before his career resurrected with Wanted, and Dabangg was second biggest hit in his streak of success. The film was adapted in Telugu and Tamil both, with its title being Gabbar Singh in Telugu and Osthe in Tamil.
Vidya Balan was literally on a roll as she gave two back-to-back hits, first of course was The Dirty Picture and the second in line was a suspense thriller-Kahaani. A tale with twists and turns, Kahaani is counted as one of Vidya’s career best films. And with such an interesting concept, the film was adapted in Telugu and was titled Anamika. Just the right kind of inspiration!
This film is one of Shah Rukh Khan’s career best performances, and along with him Mahima Chaudhary added to the life of the film. The songs in the film particularly did very well with the audience. The film is a very inspiring love story of two people who are made for each other, but they are not destined to be together and still destiny makes ends meet for them. The story with such a great backdrop was remade in Telugu and was titled Pelli Kanuka.
