Amidst the constant battle for eyeballs, Hollywood is certainly giving Bollywood a stiff competition. However, India has always been a loyal Bollywood fan base, and Hollywood movies, especially the animation ones are deemed as ‘kid films.’ In order to increase their reach, Hollywood has now started approaching big Bollywood names to dub for the films in a bid to get better penetration in the market. The latest example being that of Arjun Kapoor dubbing for Buck in the upcoming Ice Age: Collision Course.
While there are reports of Arjun Kapoor channelling his inner Anil Kapoor and Munnabhai for his stint as Buck, here are few other big names of Bollywood who have ventured down the same route.
The Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan literally stepped in the shoes of Mr Incredible for the 2004 Hindi version, titled ‘Hum Hain Lajawab.’ Shah Rukh is said to have agreed to the deal because his seven-year-old son, Aryan got to do a voiceover, too. In an interview the actor admitted, "My son saw the stills of the film and he commented that only a real hero would do this film... I just had to take it up.” He further added that "In the film, Mr Lajawab is like a big bear. He's huge - about 6'4'' - but he is a gentleman. He is charismatic and generous. I'd like to believe that I'm as kind as him. Importantly, he has an amount of warmth. I think I have that quality especially when it comes to children." Well, as we all know the film was indeed lajawab!
Vivek Oberoi who was last seen as a villain in Krrish 3, also lent his voice to Electro, who is villain to the web-casting superhero, Spiderman. Vivek called this is a big responsibility and in an interview said, “I will be Electro’s voice in the Hindi version of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. I have always been a huge fan of the Spider-Man comics and films. Max Dillon/Electro is an immensely fascinating and complex character and it will be interesting to face off with Spider-Man.”
Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan lent their voice to the super-cute couple of Jewel and Blu in Rio 2, sequel to the 2011-hit Rio. The English version of this lovable macaws was voiced by Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg. When asked about her reason for lending her voice for an animated movie, Sonakshi replied, “I love watching animation films, so when they approached me to lend my voice to the sequel of one of the most loved animations – Rio… I didn’t have to think twice! It’s a completely new experience for me and I’m very excited! It’s a treat not only for the kids, but families as well!”
Bollywood stars Priyanka Chopra, Irrfan Khan, Nana Patekar, Om Puri and Shefali Shah have lent their voice for the Hindi version of Disney’s upcoming American live-action epic release “The Jungle Book”. The original film is a re-imagining of Walt Disney’s 1967 animated movie of the same name. Nana who was the part of the series, “Jungle Book: The Adventures of Mowgli” that was aired on Doordarshan, has dubbed for Sher Khan. “The Jungle Book is so very special to India, and we want our audience enjoy Disney’s all-new live-action adaptation. We wanted nothing but the best for the Hindi version of the film. We are so excited to have such veterans and A list actors come together to voice and bring alive these beloved characters making it like a high scale Hindi film,” said Amrita Pandey, Vice-President – Studios, Disney India.
After the massive success of The Jungle Book, Disney India collaborated with Varun Dhawan for Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War’s Hindi dubbed version. Varun commented on the association with Captain America: Civil War, and said, “Captain America is a matured and a balanced leader. This is something that I am not. So that made it all the more challenging for me. Captain America Civil War is bigger better and the action is huge. It’s a film for kids and adults and the actual moral of the film is something I loved and believed in. I’m very happy to be part of the Marvel Universe!”
