Released on August 29, 2008 Rock On!! just completed eight years. The film directed by Abishek Kapoor, opened to rave reviews and went on to be a moderate success. However as the years passed the film has only grown in stature as a cult. It’s status is also confirmed by the tremendous buzz around that the upcoming sequel has been generating. Here are eight interesting facts about the film to commemorate its eight anniversary.
Farhan Akhtar had already become a youth icon as a director of the cult Dil Chahta Hai. And considering his good looks he had started getting offers to act as well. His first film as an actor was Fakir Of Venice, which did not make it to the silver screen. That made Rock On!! the first time that the audience saw Farhan as an actor. Since then Farhan has gone on to do many hit films.
Rock On!! also introduced us to Farhan Akhtar the singer! His charm worked not just on screen, but even on stage. He had started by performing at a series of live concerts across the country to promote the film. The shows also featured Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the composers for the film apart from the cast. The filmmaker-actor has since then gone on to perform at numerous stage shows.
Prachi Desai was already a household name when Rock On!! happened. She was Ekta Kapoor’s favourite and had acted as the lead actress in Kasamh Se and Kasautii Zindagii Ki. Rock On!! was her first break on the big screen. The actress has since then appeared in hits like Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Bol Bachchan and Ek Villain.
Arjun Rampal debuted as an actor in 2001 with Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat. However it was not until Rock On!! that he got recognized as an capable actor. Rock On!! had Arjun playing guitar player and did it with much conviction. And he got awarded with his first National Award for the Best Supporting Actor.
Rock On!! is the first Bollywood film around a Rock band and rock music. This was also first musical bromance made in Bollywood.
The film also made it to the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine (Indian edition), the first Indian film to do it. The cover featured the lead actors and the music directors. Farhan Akhtar termed this as a dream come true. What makes it interesting is that the film’s music had drawn a lot of no-so-positive reviews when it was released.
The writer and director had drawn inspiration from the band members of the iconic Eagles band for the characters of the film. The birthday of Farhan’s character was highlighted as July 22, which also happens to be the birthday of Don Henley, the lead vocalist of the Eagles. Also, the Arjun Rampal’s character was called Joe in the film, which is also the name of the lead guitarists of the Eagles, Joe Walsh.
The lead actors had undergone training in the respective instruments that they played on screen. Arjun Rampal trained in guitar under Chandresh from the band Dream Out Loud, Purab Kohli learnt drums from Lindsay D’Mello and Luke Kenny learned from the Loy. Farhan Akhtar got lessons in vocals from Shankar.
