Konkana Sen Sharma’s directorial debut, A Death In The Gunj, has received quite a positive reviews, but it is not for the first time that an actress has donned the director’s hat. The industry though has had women directors at fore, but it is not often that we see actresses behind the camera calling the shots. Actors have a dynamic sense of filmmaking and many have also stated their desire to direct films, and as they wait for their acting career to halt to take the plunge, here are actresses who chose to be different:
Konkana has successfully been a part of commercial as well as arty films. She debuted in a Bengali film in 2000, but her acting skills got its due credit when she won a National Award for her role in Mr. And Mrs. Iyer in 2002. The film was directed by her mother. And it is from since that Konkana is a name in the industry, an actress known for her talent more than looks. With a career spanning to a decade and more, Konkana has now made her directorial debut with A Death In The Gunj. She had also directed a short film before, but A Death In The Gunj is her hand at exploring the Hindi cinema space.
Divya debuted in Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo opposite Akshay Kumar, post which Divya though received offers but refused to act in films. Till only recently, Divya has now donned the director’s hat. She made her directorial debut with Yaariyan in 2014, the story that revolved around youngsters was a hit. Post that she directed Sanam Re which released on the occasion of Valentine’s this year. She has often been asked as to why she chose direction over acting, to which her standard reply is that she just didn’t want to be a pretty face in the industry. She still gets offers to take up acting, but Divya sems to have taken an inclination towards direction, and if rumours are anything to go by then her next directorial will be Aashiqui 3 starring Hrithik Roshan.
The ‘Dream Girl’ has had her stint of hit and flops, but what really set out for her was her stint in direction. She made her directorial debut in 1992 with Dil Aashna Hai starring Shah Rukh Khan and Divya Bharti. The film didn’t do too well, and with that Hema Malini’s directorial career didn’t get to see the light of the day. Failing in directing films, she rather chose to get into direction for television. She directed a TV series Noopur – a story of a Bharatnatyam dancer, in which she was directing and acting too.
Pooja started her film career when she was just 17 in 1989, her acting career spans over a decade and more. Post which in 2003 she made her directorial debut with Paap, the film quite didn’t live upto the expectations of the audience. She further moved on to only direct films, and did not face the camera since. Her choice of subjects for her films has been quite bold and bare. Currently she is working on her upcoming film Cabaret which stars Richa Chadda and Gulshan Devaiah. The woman has sure learnt from her daddy to do the work.
Nandita Das is known for her acting skills as well as direction. She debuted with Parinati in 1989, and since has been a well-known actress in the industry. Her work has been appreciated in many a films she has done. She made her directorial debut with Firaaq in 2008, and the film was appreciated by audience and critics. The film also won a many international awards for the topic it dealt with. It is the only film that she has directed, but the film had good reviews across.
