It is difficult not to accept the importance of Dil Chahta Hai in Bollywood. The film possibly changed the way the industry was making films. More so it changed the way the youth looked at films. Suddenly there were moments in a film that actually connected with the thought process of the new urban youth. The film spoke a language of friendship that was not only immediately identified but also wishful.
Here are some of the moments from this fantastic film that made us wish we had such relationships. And for the ones who had such relationships, the film taught them to treasure the same!
Admit it. Goa became a far more promising destination for a group of friends after Akaash (Aamir Khan), Sam (Saif Ali Khan) and Sid (Akshaye Khanna) drove to the destination in the beautiful Mercedes. Innumerable of the youngsters have possibly made similar Goa plans. Some work out, some don’t. What’s certain is that the Goa tourism benefitted for the better.
Sitting on a wall atop a hill, Sid showed his two friends a ship and comparing its journey to their own lives. Akaash cut him to say that their friendship would stand the test of time. Hum Dost The, Hai Rahenge, Hamesha. The remark struck a chord with almost every young chap.
For the ones who indeed made it to Goa, it almost became ritualistic to also head to the charpora fort and sit on the very same wall that Akaash, Sam and Sid sat on while making the promise of lifelong friendship.
When Akaash and Sid find Sameer upset in his room after his return from Goa, Akaash cleverly manipulates him to talk about Christine – the Swiss girl Sam had met in Goa. Sam says, “Tumhe kya lagta hai, main is takiye pe rozz baithta hu,” revealing about his ordeal and why he was sitting on a soft pillow much to the entertainment of his best friends.
Sam of course was the butt of Akaash’s jokes for most part of the film. Right in the beginning Akaash gets Sam dumped by his girlfriend Priya. Later in the film the wicked Akaash also ridicules Sam’s constant falling in love as he states “aaj Pooja, kal koi dooja.” This remains of one of the most used dialogues on Dubsmash till date.
What are friends for!
When Sam meets Pooja (Sonali Kulkani) at his home for the first time they talk of Sam’s friends. Pooja pics up a photo frame that features the three friends and remarks that they indeed look like best friends. Sam replies, “Ya toh yeh dosti gehri hai ya yeh photo 3D hai!” Best clicks with the best friends!
As the film moves towards its end Akaash and Sid finally talk after close to two years. And they meet like nothing had ever gone wrong. Akaash asks for forgiveness and Sid says he should apologise too. They hug and everything is back to being sunny again. Friends keep no grudges. Friends are always there, when you need them.
