Bollywood is a place where a star commands and the producers submit. Often the commands are sky high remuneration for films, which shoot up the budgets of films. With the emergence of the satellite markets, some stars figured that they could earn a lot more from satellite rights of films than outright compensation from the producers. Over the last couple of years, a trend has started where celebrities try negotiating a huge multi-film deal with channels that buy broadcasting rights of films. Hrithik Roshan in the last star to successfully close such a deal. Here’s a look at the massive satellite deals that have been inked by our stars
The latest star to enter into a multi-film satellite deal, Hrithik Roshan has broken all the previous records when it comes to the amount that he has got the broadcasters to cough up. At Rs 550 crore, Hrithik surpasses Salman Khan’s deal that was charted in 2013. In return for the money the channel will get broadcasting rights for the actors next six films, averaging at an astounding Rs 91 crore per film. That is what Hrithik Roshan stands to make from his next six films! His price was boosted by the fact that last five films featuring Hrithik Roshan have worked extremely well on television, garnering great ratings. This is a price that other stars are going to find hard to emulate.
The Sultan of the box office had stunned the industry as well as his fans when a multi-film deal for his films was announced in January 2013. The actor took home a neat Rs 500 crore from the deal, which was for a period of five years. As per the deal, the channel will own broadcasting rights of Salman Khan films that release till the end of 2017. That, however, excludes his latest release Sultan, which was sold off to another channel by Yash Raj Films. The films that are a part the deal are Jai Ho, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and his two releases scheduled for 2017. Apart from that, his production Hero was also a part of the bouquet.
Ajay Devgn backed by some big hits over the last five years was the second celebrity to chalk a deal on the same lines. His compensation, however, is a lower Rs 400 for six films. The deal was closed in early 2013 and will expire by the end of 2017. The films that have so far been a part of the deal are Himmatwala, Satyagraha, Singham Returns, Action Jackson and Drishyam. Ajay, however, says that he passes on the benefits of the bulk deal to the producers as well, enabling them to earn higher revenues for the film. “"Business is becoming increasingly open and clear, so it's easier to deal directly. I am securing the producer a higher value, so he benefits eventually, as they often depend on satellite rights to garner a substantial amount of the cost of production. But I am also ensuring a certain amount for myself,” he was quoted right after the deal. On an average, Ajay takes home a sum of Rs 28 crore per film.
Varun Dhawan is the youngest star to make an entry into this club. This younger son of David Dhawan has fast emerged into one of the biggest stars among his generation of actors. And he is consistently working towards becoming a bigger name. The actor, handled by the same company as Salman Khan, is said to have negotiated a deal of Rs 300 crore with the same channel. The deal will include his movie for next five years, except Judwaa 2. It may be noted that the 29-year-old actor has not seen flops in his four-year-old career so far. His last film Dilwale (Rs 140 crore) is the only film that cannot be termed a hit, though producers Red Chillies Entertainment broke even on their investments.
