With the Bollywood industry experiencing a whole new wave as far as the content is concerned, a change in the thought process of the audiences gives Hollwyood films an upper hand in terms of viewership as compared to Bollywood. With films churning out weeks after weeks, audiences have often found themselves in a dilemma as to which film will be worthwhile to spend their monies on. And with big Hollywood and Bollywood movie releases happening on the same day, the audiences, over the past few months have proved that Bollywood has been fighting a losing battle against Hollywood films. The star-power in films no more seem to influence the choice that the audiences makes, rather it is the content that is now the king. Believe it or not, but the biggest films of Bollywood have failed as opposed to Hollywood films that released on the same date. If you believe me not, then here is the proof:
Fitoor starring Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapur looked like one of the most promising film towards the end of last year. With our expectations soaring high, the film rather came out as a disappointment for the many people who thought that the film in its time had both, a good star cast and an even better story. The film was so disappointing that it only earned 17.29 crores, which was less than 25.83 Crores earned by the Yami Gautam and Pulkit Samrat starrer Sanam Re. But though Sanam Re did well, the week’s highest grosser was the Hollywood film Deadpool which minted over 28.34 crores.
1920 London, One Night Stand, Traffic, and Captain America: Civil War released together on May 6. Sharman Joshi and Meera Chopra starrer 1920 London, the third installment in the 1920 horror franchise collected around 14.23 crores. Small budget yet strong on content, the film Traffic starring Manoj Bajpayee and Jimmy Shergill managed to collect 3.69 crores. But the major disappointment remained Sunny Leone and Tanuj Virvani starrer One Night Stand, the film was not only thrashed down by the critics, but it turned out to be a major disappointment for the audience. The film only earned 3 crores at the Box Office, hands down making it one of the biggest flops till date. As opposed to all the three Bollywood films, the Hollywood film Captain America: Civil War received lots of appreciation and love from the young audience. The film collected 54.14 crores, which sadly was more than the three Bollywood films’ amount put together.
While the race is just catching pace with the audiences, looks like Hollywood still has an upper hand with the youth in India. And not to forget that the highest grosser up till now still remains Jungle Book which minted 132.96, the film collected more than Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan, and though the films released weeks apart, Jungle Book still received more love from the audience than the superstar starrer did. Is this change for the good, or is it a challenge that the Hindi film industry will often face? All we can do is keep our hopes high, and wait for something record breaking to happen in terms of Bollywood films.
