Anushka Sharma, often referred to as the bubbly Punjabi girl for her roles in the beginning of her career, has grown way beyond it. Today, as we look back, Anushka over these many years have portrayed roles that are different yet similar. All the characters she portrayed are not just relatable, but also reality based which helps her connect to her audiences. And as her upcoming Sultan is to release soon, here is what Anushka had to say about the film, working with the Khans, and about life in general:
Yes perhaps, I’m very grateful for this opportunity. I never really worked towards working with a particular star. I have always worked towards the script and the director. When you go the right way in life, great things happen. Even I never thought that something like this would happen, but it did. And now that it has happened then I feel great that in my career I have worked with the biggest names in Bollywood. All the three are great actors, the Khans can act in their sleep.
I don’t know, I think it’s to do with things changing in the world. If you go back 15 years, not many girls worked in the industry. But over the years things changed, and girls have come to fore. Whether its direction, cinematography, costumes, or take anything, girls are now doing things that at one time nobody even thought they will do. There are scripts written keeping in mind a female protagonist, and those women-centric films are working. This encourages studios and producers to invest their money in films with female protagonists. I'm self-made, I'm grateful to be at a position where I want to do good roles.
I had less than six weeks to prepare. And like everyone even I had a very stereotypical image of how wrestlers are. I always believed them to a have a built, and I don’t look like that at all. I researched and watched videos, I learnt that there are weight categories and there are girls with toned body like mine who wrestle. To look the part I trained with Jagdishji, who taught me the right techniques and moves. It’s a contact sport, I trained to wrestle with a man and the physical proximity was so much that I did feel a little uneasy towards the beginning. At first I found the sport very bizarre, it felt weird, but I had to come out of that awkwardness. And then I just went for it fearlessly, I learnt it without any inhibitions.
YRF is a very comfortable area for me, it feels good to see that we all are growing together. They have signed me for my career best films under their banner, and it is because of them that I am here in front of you. I just hope the relationship continues the way it is. Aditya Chopra is someone who is responsible for where I am today, he put faith in me when nobody else did. Karan Johar himself said in an interview that he told Adi not to cast me in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, but he still did.
I’ve just understood that production is actually people management. I handle the creative aspects, and I have a very good team to work. As a producer or even as an actor you see whether a particular film is going to do well or not. Or whether it’s saying something that you want to back, as an actor you can drop your fees and as a producer you can back. As a producer there is a lot that goes into it, sometimes you feel if this went wrong even that will go wrong. A producer should see potential. Nothing will come whole to you, you will have to develop it.
The people who make personal remarks on social media are cowards. They do not have any guts! These are the people who you look at and you know that they are sad about their existence. Yeh log duniya se sadey hue hain. They are the people who are bored in life. At first the trolls used to affect me, but today I feel sad for such people. They have so much hatred towards people that they always want to bog them down. I can’t give such people, such literal losers, power to change my mood. I am what I am today because of my hard work, and everybody has problems irrespective of their stature.
