Recently, Bollywood has chanced upon a new formula to deliver hits, biopic!
Biopic is the new trend in Bollywood, which seems to have caught everyone’s fancy for it garners eyeball aplenty. The fact that the story is based on the life of an individual resonates well with the audience, and helps them establish connect with the happenings onscreen. The story being acted on the 70mm screen is not a piece of someone’s fanciful imagination, but an event that has actually occurred in the life of the protagonist.
A Neerja today resonates very well with the audience, not just because of the very beautifully done technicalities, but because it actually happened, the events took place in real time. We as human beings are very peculiar creatures and full of curiosity. These stories work because we want to know the details of the event; when did it happen, how it did happen and why did it happen! This curiosity plays a large part in pulling the audience to theatre.
This just does not limit itself to biopics, but also to movies that happen to be inspired or based on real life events. A Talvar or a No One Killed Jessica, works so spectacularly because it is based on real life happenings. It plays on the natural instinct of audience to delve in the events, and understand, and discover as much of it as possible.
Apart from the plethora of other reasons available at hand, is the fact that most of the biopics are built on the subjects that were either shrouded in controversy or mystery. An Azhar works because it is based on the life of a cricketer whose career seemed to have ended with a controversy. The characters that we will being seeing on-screen are all known, we have seen them in flesh, we have seen them react and would now like to see them on celluloid. On being asked at the trailer launch of Azhar, of their belief in the movie, the cast was quick to reply that this story deserves to be told.
Well, it is just not the story that we want to see on the big screen, but also see how a particular actor transforms oneself in to the skin of the said character. There is a huge talk built on the actors transformational journey, for example, Randeep Hooda underwent rigorous training to achieve the desired look for his upcoming Sarabjit. Actors undergo a lot of efforts to ensure that they not only play the part, but also look the part. When Aishwarya appears on screen in the Sarabjit trailer, she looks very bit of a disturbed sister, which is very unlike the glamorous superstar the world knows her as.
It is effort of the actor, backed by a solid story, which ensures that biopics attract eyeballs. nWell, we saw the year opening with Airlift and Neerja to a thunderous response, and with more than a couple of biopics scheduled for the coming months, 2016 in Bollywood seems to be the year of biopics.
