The first couple of scenes of Saat Uchakkey surprises you. What appears is a thriller instead of the comedy that the trailer promises. We are introduced to this dangerous charterer Bichchi who is locked up in solitary confinement in a mental asylum. People avoid him and there are various rumours around his remarkable abilities to control people.
Cut to the film introduces us to Pappi Jatwala (Manoj Bajpayee) and his gang of friends. And suddenly the tone of the film changes into casual fun. These characters are based somewhere in Delhi and speak a language filled with abused. Pappi is in a financial mess because his expenses are always more than what he can earn. His expenses are driven by his desire to provide his lady love simple luxuries – LCD TV and table fans! Pepped up by two of his friends he decides to take the shortcut – a heist – that should ensure that they earn enough money for their lives. Other characters in the equation are Sona (Aditi Sharma) who is Pappi’s love interest, Jaggi (Vijay Raaz) a lawyer who teams up with Pappu and Tejpal (Kay Kay), a rather upright policeman who is hopelessly in love with Sona.
The rest of the film is about how Pappi and his team goes on to find the treasure, under the watchful eyes of Tejpal. And what happens after that.
The film’s primary strength lies in the language used by the characters and the performances delivered by the primary cast. Manoj Bajpayee is in sparkling form and after ages we have Kay Kay getting it right. Aditi Sharma packs a punch with a role that is unlike what she has done earlier. Anupam Kher hams like never before.
Where the film falls, however, is the screenplay. While the first half passes by, the post interval jinx strikes. Somewhere into the second half, the film loses perspective and wavers into a territory that it fails to justify. A territory of divinity and moral high-ground! Debutant director Sanjeev Sharma possibly aimed at making a statement, and fails. A moral science lesson is the last thing you expect when you watching an A-rated film!
Saat Uchakkey is partly fun. It is a film you could possibly give a try of you like movies that have characters rooted to the city of Delhi or for that matter any city in Northern India. You certainly would not miss much if you skip it.
