Richa Chadda is known to be fiercy, and bold when it comes to portraying the many roles on-screen. But she is no different in reality, she is just what a modern day woman should be like. She is known not just for her celebrity status, but also for her work towards the social causes. And after being associated with various social causes, Richa has now joined hands with Purnata, an NGO which rescues woman from the clutches of human trafficking. And when asked about the initiative, this is what she had to say:
You joined hands with Purnata, an NGO for the betterment of women rescued from human trafficking. What bought about this association, and why Purnata in particular?
We were doing some research on people who were helping women rescued from human trafficking. There were people who rescued women, but were not helping them with rehabilitation. So we narrowed down on people who were rehabilitating them. What do the women do after they are rescued? How do they live? How do they survive? Who takes care of their children? So we wanted to work with someone who had all these questions answered. And Purnata was successfully doing that. They had success stories where recently they got a girl married. There was proof of their work.
What issues related to women welfare concern you the most?
The issue that concerns me that women trafficking is a modern form of slavery. What these girls go through is nothing short of slavery. These girls get abducted sometimes at the age of six-seven, many of them lose hope. Women who are in their twenties have 10-11 years-old children because they are raped.
Are women, irrespective of their caste, culture, or locality, still been treated as inferiors?
Of course! We have lived in a patriarchal society for several years, and now people are taking steps to change the dimensions. The change can’t happen overnight. But if you see, you and I are at a better position than our mothers, and our mothers were in a better position than our grandmothers. The change is slow, but it is coming and we should be grateful for that.
With your initiative it is the change that you want to see in the society?
My initiative is about humanity. And it is not like women are the only people who suffer from human trafficking. Even children and men suffer from human trafficking. Only recently five children were rescued out of which three were girls and rest two were boys.
Do you think you celebrity status will help to bring this issue to light? Does it take a celebrity to draw attention on social issues?
Yes definitely, I feel that when a celebrity associates with a cause it really helps to bring such issues to light. That’s what everyone should do, take all h attention coming your way and use it for something positive. That is my intention and I have no shame in saying that.
What is KETTO, and how is Kunal Kapoor associated with the cause?
KETTO is a crowd funding association, and Kunal is a partner there. And we needed a partner to support our cause, and KETTO does a lot of that.
