While shooting for Hum Saath Saath Hai in Rajasthan, Salman with other Bollywood stars was allegedly involved in killing two blackbucks on the night of October 1 and 2 respectively. The endangered species were killed in the outskirts of Kankani village near Jodhpur. The Bishnoi tribe then registered a case against Salman for poaching under the Wildlife Protection Act. The case went on for years, in 2006 the actor was convicted and was sentenced for a five-year jail, but Salman appealed and the sentence was upheld by the sessions court. Salman was not allowed to leave the country without prior permission from the court. Post which the case was then heard by the High Court and the sentenced was maintained only until the appeal was made in the Supreme Court. Last heard a fresh plea was being considered.
There are two cases against Salman, one of killing blackbucks and another one of killing chinkaras. It was on Monday that the actor was acquitted on the chinkara poaching case by the Rajasthan High Court has it couldn’t be proved that the pellets found in the vehicle matched the pellets of the gun that was there in Salman’s room. The acquaintance comes as a moajor relief for the star as the decision was pending for the last 18 years. The co-accused involved Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu, and Neelam who were present with Salman during the hunting. He was also sentenced to imprisonment for one year and five year respectively in his blackbuck and chinkara case, and was also asked to pay a fine of Rs 25,000. The cases registered against him were under Wildlife Protection Act for killing one chinkara in Bhawad village and a second one in Manthania village.
In relation with the blackbuck poaching case Salman was believed to be carrying and using illegal arms during the shoot of Hum Saath Saath Hain. He was also accused of carrying arms whose license had expired. During the hearing of the case however Salman was reportedly not present when called for the first hearing. The trial however couldn’t proceed because of the absence of four witnesses which included Rajat Mishra the then District Magistrate of Jodhpur, one forest officer, and two police officers. On Salman’s plea the court then allowed Salman to summon five prosecution witnesses for re-examination of whom only the investigating officer and the then Asst. Superintendent of , Ashok Patni, had appeared. The case remains pending.
