Sarbjit, a heart-wrenching tale of a farmer in Punjab who was wrongly convicted of being an Indian spy and a terrorist by Pakistan, who they thought was responsible for the 1992 Lahore bomb blast. The story of his struggle and that of his sister Dalbir Kaur who made all ends meet to see her brother breathe freedom, has done down in the history of both the nations. While Sarabjit Singh was later declared innocent, he was then attacked by his jail inmates leaving him badly injured. Hospitalized for a few days, Sarabjit succumbed to his injuries and died in the hospital itself.
Directed By Omung Kumar, the film stars Randdep Hooda as Sarbjit Singh, Aishwarya Rai as his sister Dalbir Kaur, and also has Richa Chaddha and Darshan Kumar in supporting roles. The film was much talked about during its making for the transformation that Randeep went through to play a jail convict. Aishwarya in the role of Dalbir Kaur portrayed in the best manner the plight of a sister who constantly struggled to bring her brother back home.
With the tale so relatable, Sarbjit is winning hearts slow but many. The film opened to 1500 screens across India, and its first day collection as reported was 3.69 crores. The first day collection was though dull, the film saw a jump on its second and third day. On day two the film saw an upward climb and minted 4.56 crores. And on the final day of the weekend a further growth was seen in the collection with the film earning 5.71 crores bringing the total to a whooping 13.6 crores.
Though the film has received mixed reviews from the critics, it has surely struck an emotional chord with the viewers. Randeep’s transformation to play a jail convict added a convincing vibe to his character, his acting chops much appreciated and applauded by the critics as well as the audiences. Aishwarya’s performance of Sarbjit’s sister too moved the audiences, portraying the actual struggle of Sarabjit Singh and that of his family who tried their best to bring Sarabjit back home.
With Aishwarya’s performance is said to have lacked the Punjabi accent, but with Randeep’s act at his best, the film sure has a reason that makes it a must-watch. With this week ahead of us, the fate of the film will only be decided over the next few days. But with the positive responses received by the film even after a few critics have slammed it down, the audience sure looks impressed with the film.
