The independence struggle in India was a collaborative effort of many leaders who in the process lost their lives for the freedom of the whole nation. And while we don’t have much records of what happened back then, the events that led to our freedom could only be brought back to life through films. And so, here are 10 films that one must watch today as to consider ourselves lucky to have had people who fought for us to live with freedom today:
The film is set during a time when India was ruled by the British, and revolves around a man who fought against them for Independence on realizing that they intended to do wrong. Kranti starring the biggest actors- Dilip Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Manoj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Parveen Babi, and Sarika, spoke of the struggle that we went through to attain freedom from rulers who didn’t want well of our Nation. The film went on to do really well, and become the second highest grosser of the year.
The film is an action-thriller drama which revolves around a Police Officer played by Aamir Khan who wanted to stop the cross-border terrorism. The film takes interesting twists and turns, and even has the officer’s love story incorporated along with the tale of terrorism. The film released during the a period when there was tension in Kargil between India and Pakistan, and the film became commercially as well as critically successful.
Rang De Basanti was an inspirational film for the youth of our country to look upon to. The film spoke about the recent times and the time during our war for independence, and portrayed how we as youngsters need to take a stand against the social evils of our country. The film revolves around a British documentary filmmaker and compromises of an ensemble cast which includes Aamir Khan, Kunal Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Atul Kulkarni, Sidharth Narayan, and R. Madhavan. The film in an all time favourite and a must watch on the Independence day.
Swadesh is different from the many films made on the independence of our country, but the film promotes progressive India at its best. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Gayatri Joshi as the lead pair in the film. The story revolves around a man who works for NASA in US and comes to India in search for a woman who took care of him when he was young. Enroute to his journey he comes across life in the villages of India, and contemplates on the fact that he would want to make villages more progressive. He falls in love with his childhood friend but has to head back for an important project. He leaves with a heavy heart only to return back to now permanently live in India.
A marvel of sorts, Chak De! India is one of the most inspirational films made in the history of Bollywood. The film that stars Shah Rukh Khan along with many hockey players revolves around the Indian Girl’s Hockey team that stroke gold at the Common Wealth games. The film went on to become a commercial as well as a critical success at the Box Office. And the very impactful film is a must watch for many people who stereotype sports as a man’s game.
The film set in a period when there was British raj, the story revolves around a village whose inhabitants are burdened by huge taxes from the British people ruling them. The film stars Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh in the lead roles, and has a strong supportive cast. In an attempt to wave themselves off the taxes, an arrogant Bhuvan (Aamir khan) takes up a challenge against the rulers who agree to exempt the tax if the villagers could beat them at their very own game, cricket. The film then revolves around bringing in a team together and the task of learning to how to play cricket.
How considerate are we about the armed forces that protect us at the border day-in and day-out? Lakshya is the story of what challenges exactly does a person has to go through to be at the border protecting his country. The film stars Hrithik Roshan as an aimless young man and his struggle to get into the armed forces. The film is a coming-of-age drama set in the backdrop of the Kargil war. The film stars Preity Zinta opposite Hrithik, Preity is shown as a war reporter in the film.
The Father of our nation has many a portrayals, but it took Ben Kinsley to finally be able to portray Karamchand Mohandas Gandhi in his best form. The film revolves around the essential moments in the life of the man who fought with non-violence to set the country free from the rule of British. The film starts with Gandhi being thrown out of a train in South Africa where he went to study law, and finally ends with his assassination in 1948. The struggles that he faced during his term in South Africa for being dark in completion to the independence struggle that he led, all the aspects were highlighted.
It was a war based drama set with a backdrop of the India-Pakistan war which dates back to 1971. The film starred an ensemble cast with Akshay Khanna, Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Suneil Shetty, Tabu, Rakhee, and Pooja Bhatt in the lead. The film revolved around the lives of soldiers who are posted at the border due to a war. The film rightfully portrayed the emotions of the family members of soldiers posted at the border.
Many films have been made on Bhagat Singh and his fight for independence, but The Legend Of Bhagat Singh starring Ajay Devgn received the most appreciation. The story goes in a flashback to the struggle that Bhagat Singh encountered in his fight for freedom of the nation. The film also went on to win National Awards for being the Best Feature film in Hindi category.
