Since his foray into Bollywood twenty-five years ago, Shah Rukh Khan has come a long way! In his career of more than two decades, SRK has given us many memorable roles; his most iconic ones being that of Rahul, Raj, Kabir, and Mohan. He has serenaded countless heroines and has defined the idea of romance for a generation. The adulation and praise pour from every corner and he has been titled as the ‘Badshaah of Bollywood' or ‘King Khan'.
It is very shocking when an actor like him does movies that would be categorized as ‘mindless cinema', to which the actor himself admits, "I like to maintain balance and hence, I do one good film, followed by a couple of bad ones." And, to say that Fan is a testament to the stated fact would not be an exaggeration.
What makes the movie so special is the manner in which Shah Rukh is able to effortlessly essay two characters that represent two different ends of a spectrum. He, as a starry-eyed kid Gaurav, convinces every one of his innocence and enthusiasm towards the world. The effort of the whole team is visible as this iconic superstar turns into a completely unrecognizable kid next door, who star worships his idol, Aryan. This child-like belief is what sets Gaurav apart from Shah Rukhs iconic role as psychotic Rahul in the movie Darr.
However, the piece de resistance is his acting as the fictitious superstar Aryan Khanna. The beauty lies in the fact that the character Aryan is so similar to Shah Rukh Khan - the superstar. And, yet there is a visible difference in the mannerisms of both. Never has Shah Rukh allowed his real life actions overpower that of Aryan, adding an extra layer to the character. When quizzed about this Shah Rukh said, "It was a very conscious decision to show that Aryan is not SRK and to not let my mannerism or behavior overshadow Aryan's individuality."
In Fan, you can see glimpses of SRK who has given us roles like Mohan Bhargava in Swades, Kabir Khan in Chak De and Rahul in Darr. Shah Rukh along with director Maneesh Sharma and team, can rightfully claim all the love and appraise this movie has received, for it gave us the Shah Rukh that we all know and adore back.
And, if this performance is anything to go by, I for one am eagerly waiting for Raees!
