Some events demand movies that be made on them. The Battle of Saragarhi is one of them. On September 12, 1897 one of the fiercest battles in history was fought between the British Indian Army and Afghan Orakzai tribesmen at what is now Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The heroes here, 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikhs, the 4th battalion of the Sikh regiment fought valiantly against 10000 afghan fighters. They chose to give away their life rather than let the tribesmen take over their post.
Over a century of filmmaking later, Bollywood is finally waking up to the massive heroic feat of the 21 army men. Ironically, it is not one but three people who have thrown their hats into the rings for the same.
Here are the details
Rajkumar Santoshi has just announced that he will be making a film on the battle of Saragarhi, which will be produced by Wave Cinemas. They have not announced any cast yet but have announced the name of the film. It will be called Battle of Saragarhi and will have 21 heroes. Rahul Mitra of Wave Cinemas confirmed the same when he said, “We will recreate the 1800s. Santoshi's knowledge of history and his sense of the era is unparalleled. We will be shooting on lavish sets with a magnum opus approach. We need 21 heroes so casting is currently being finalized. An announcement will be made soon.”
In the meantime Ajay Devgn had already announced his intention to make a film on incident on twitter last year. In a tweet he mentioned, “Need your best wishes for 'Sons Of Sardaar', will match the scale of Hollywood war film '300' and based on epic Battle of Saragarhi. Diwali 2017." The film, to be directed by Ashiwini Dhir, was to go on floor soon but has been put on the backburner as Ajay will be finishing Golmaal 4 first. The film, whenever it goes on floor, is expected to also feature Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty. Talks were also on to get Salman Khan on board for a role.
The third director to have revealed his intentions to make a film on the epic fight is JP Dutta. In an interview last year the director best known for the war film Border had given a clear picture on his preparations for the film. He had said that he is in the pre-production stage and working towards finalizing technical crew for of the film. Among others he had approached Hollywood actor Hugh Dancy, and cinematographer Remi Adefarasin (known for shooting Steven Speilberg’s Band of Brothers). “Since the story touches the relationship between the Sikh soldiers and the British officers commanding the battalion, I need a huge British involvement, an international cast and crew,” he had said.
None of the films have gone on floors yet and we are just counting days till another filmmaker announces a film on the same film. Let’s wait and watch which film gets made
