After many months of speculation regarding the sequel/adaptation of Khal Nayak, the news is finally confirmed. The ‘Showman’, Subhash Ghai is all set to return to the big screen with an adaptation of the Khal Nayak 2.
Khal Nayak is the story of the capture of dreaded gangster, Ballu Balaram, by inspector Ram, played by Jackie Shroff. Ballu manages to escape from jail and Ram's girlfriend, Ganga enacted by Madhuri Dixit, who is also a cop, goes undercover to capture him. During the course though she manages to capture him, she lets him go. For the same Ganga is arrested for aiding a criminal and is accused of being in a relationship with him. As she stands trial, Ballu surrenders.
Director Subhash Ghai revealed that the film was written with Nana Patekar in mind. But things didn't work out and, rewrote the script and cast Sanjay Dutt.
In the sequel, Ballu will be seen coming out of the jail after 20 years to find himself in a completely different world. Circumstances take him back to the world of crime. Talking about the casting, Ghai said, "It'll be a multi-starrer with many new characters. You never know, Ballu might find another Khal Nayak, among them." As per the reports, Ghai is all set to hand over the reins to a younger director, but will be involved with the project in the creative capacity.
In a recent statement, Ghai has informed that Sanjay Dutt and he have joined hands to produce Khal Nayak Returns. Dutt, the 56-year-old-actor will be seen reprising his iconic character in the sequel. Ghai added, "We've made an agreement to produce Khal Nayak Returns which will roll by the year-end or early next year. I'd met Sanjay when he was out on parole and discussed the idea with him. He made a soundtrack with some voiceover in the background which I loved. Impressed with his passion for the film, we decided to take the idea forward." He also revealed that he plans to make an intelligent sequel like that of The Godfather.
When asked if the iconic song, ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai?’ will be back in the sequel, he said that the title track will be retained, however, they are yet to take a call on Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai.
