She made her Bollywood debut with Boom (2003), but it was not until 2005 that Katrina Kaif had her first taste of success. There has been no looking back for the actress ever since! From delivering successive hits to being the first actress to have a film that earned over Rs 250 crore at the box office, she has been a box office sensation. So much so that at some point Katrina started being referred to as a lucky charm by everyone in the trade circles because she seemed capable of rubbing off her charm on people who worked with her. We look into a few names who certainly got touched by her magic.
Akshay Kumar had a series of flops stretched over a period of two years before his film with Katrina Kaif happened. Humko Deewana Kar Gaye was not critically appreciated but the audience loved the chemistry between the leads. Soon enough they were offered any more films. Vipul Shah got them back first with Namastey London (2007). In the meantime, Akshay’s career touched dizzying heights as he was branded outright king of the box office. This is the period when Akshay did films like Welcome andshaSingh in Kinng with Katrina.
Bobby Deol had gone without a hit for five years and Sunny for seven before they got together with their father to producer Apne. Since this was the first film that the father-song trio was seen together in the buzz for release was great. Getting Katrina Kaif as the female lead opposite Bobby worked like a catalyst. The film scored despite releasing alongside two other films, including Aap Ka Surroor.
Katrina was the last A-list actress to have romanced Govinda on-screen in Partner. The film also happens to be Govinda’s last hit. Interestingly it almost got the veteran actor back to action with multiple film offers, something that had died down after repeated failures over few years before Partner released.
Touted as one of the biggest directors of Bollywood today, Kabir Khan had started with a critically acclaimed Kabul Express. However, it was only with New York that he found commercial success for the first time. The film’s response was shouldered by Katrina, who was easily the biggest name in the cast at that point in time. The film also featured John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan. Later Kabir worked with Katrina again in Ek Tha Tiger, which went on to become Salman’s biggest grosser till then, almost touching the magical Rs 200 crore mark at the domestic box office.
Ranbir Kapoor was touted as the next superstar as soon as he debuted in Saawariya. And though the debut film was a dud he made up for lost ground with films like Bachna Ae Haseeno and Wake Up Sid. But it was not until he paired with Katrina Kaif for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani that Ranbir saw his first superhit. It is also said that the two started dating during the making of the film. Soon after they were soon in another successful film Raajneeti.
Much was riding on Hrithik Roshan as he attempted to do a Bachchan with the Agneepath remake. And Katrina Kaif added just the right amount of zing to the film with her item number, Chikni Chameli. Much of the buzz of the film was because of Katrina’s Kaif, as many in the audience made way to the theatre just to watch her dance. It worked fabulously for the film as it marked Hrithik’s entry into the coveted 100 crore club. He has not delivered anything lesser than a 100 crore ever since! This included Bang Bang with Katrina Kaif, where the chemistry sizzled on screened.
