EXCLUSIVE: Negative Roles Give You A Lot Of Scope To Act: Yash Gera| follo.in

Happy Birthday Yash Gera! Yash, who started his career as a DJ, successfully carved a niche for himself in the world of television. He debuted on TV with Palampur Express and went on to play a negative character in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge. As he turns a year older today, Yash candidly speaks to follo about his journey from a DJ to an actor…

You started your career as a DJ, how did the transition to acting happen?
Ideally, I wanted to be in the army. I did the NCC camps, but just before the selection, I met with an accident and I could not get into the forces. Then DJing happened only because my brother was  DJ. Then around 2006 I started modeling in Delhi, where I started getting fashion shows and some modeling assignments. Around 2009 I moved to Mumbai, and really struggled hard for a month. I was rejected from many auditions because I did not have a proper photo shoot, which met their requirements. So after that I got a new photo shoot done in Mumbai. So that’s how it all started…
You entered the industry without a godfather, how has the journey been…
The journey has not been an easy one. If you have a godfather in the industry ghar hi ghar me sab decide ho jata hai. Whereas without a godfather a person has to go through many auditions, people are unwilling to invest in freshers. Without a filmi background, it is very difficult to get into the industry and achieve a firm grip. To add to it there is a lot of competition now, people are ready to work for much less pay.
You have been into television for a long time now, don’t you fear being a typecast, also why is that you prefer doing negative roles?
Firstly, I don’t fear being a typecast at all. See TV has majorly been women oriented. Saas-bahu serials have been ruling the TV scene for the long time now and there is not much scope to show your acting prowess in the these serials specially if you’re playing a positive character. Hence, I prefer playing a negative character, as there is a lot of scope to act.
Tell us about the most memorable thing in life until now…
The most memorable thing in life until now has been my debut show Palampur Express. The name of my character in this show was Dharam, which was also my father’s real name. The show aired on May 25, which was my father’s birthday. All this is so memorable and special for me because my family did not initially support me; it was only my brother who encouraged me to take my modeling.
Do you want to venture into Bollywood and what kind of roles would you like to take up?
Yes I would definitely like to venture into Bollywood. I really would like to do something like Ranbir Kapoor’s role Rockstar or Tamasha. I can relate to those kind of films and I really love Imitiaz Ali’s work.
Who have been Yash’s role models?
My role models have been Arjun Rampal and Salman Khan. I really adore Salman Khan not just because he is a wonderful actor but even an amazing human being.
