“We live in oppressive times. We in Bollywood now have, one of our own as a thought police!" Director/producer Mahesh Bhatt’s upcoming film ‘Love Games’ recently went under the censor knife. Certain four letter words were muted, kiss scenes were shortened and drug consumption by the hero of the film was omitted. On going through this excruciating process, Mahesh Bhatt took to Twitter to vent out his frustration.
His second tweet read, “Instead of calling the process of limiting our self expression & dissent as "censorship", he calls it "concern for our SANSKRITI !(sic)" His third and last tweet said, “This guy feels that we Indians are ready to support repression as long as it is done by hiding behind the high sounding word `our tradition'."
Mahesh Bhatt and Vishesh Films have become the face of erotic thrillers in India, with films like ‘Raaz’, ‘Murder’ and ‘Jism’. The industry, on the whole, is not happy with the Censor Board Chief Pahlaj Nihalani’s decisions on cuts and omissions.
